Me Myself And Iceland eBook Brian Rueb Reviews
Great reading!, I really like it, of course I'm in to photography. Immediately went to check the images from the trip, awesome! I also went to Iceland two years ago and still is one of my best travel experiences. I wonder what is Rich-Chad doing this days....
I've been following Brian Reub since the early days of flickr, where I was amazed by his photographic skills and entertained by the well-written that accompanied his images.
When he announced he was going on his expedition to Iceland and was going to write a book about it, I knew that it would be something I'd want to read, and the final product did not disappoint.
Well done, Brian!
Outstanding story telling by Brian.
I was following the photography of Brian Rueb on Flickr in 2009 when he announced his plan to visit Iceland for a summer on a hiking/photography tour and to write about his adventures. He is known for his storytelling ability, can find something entertaining to write about in every photography outing, and was urged by family and friends to write a book. He settled on planning a grand adventure to Iceland in 2009, though writing the book took years longer than he anticipated. In the meantime he has been back to Iceland several times.
It is a very long book, ~450 pages, or 10-11 hours of reading in format and is a somewhat exhaustive day-by-day reporting of his trip based on the journals and social media posts that he maintained at the time. However, it's not really a travel guide, as there are no maps or recommended itineraries, nor a list of resources or recommendations on places to see and places to stay. Nor are there any photographs, which I found disappointing, since his images, which I was able to find on-line, are actually quite stunning and very professional. I'm sure he decided to omit them since photographs don't render well in the format; however books can be read on any device, including a laptop or iPad where the photos could be viewed properly. Alternatively, hyperlinks to his photography website would have been useful.
Though Rueb did a lot of research and planning prior to his trip, in some regards he was still quite unprepared for the rigors of travelling. For instance, he had never erected the tent that he was going to be sleeping in for months; nor did he ever actually load the backpack and try to take a hike in it. He gave up his physical training program after about one week because it was too hard. He reminded me of Cheryl Strayed in "The Wild".
There are many humorous and interesting anecdotes of Rueb's travels throughout Iceland on a shoestring budget. The story of his first experience in public nude hot tub bathing in Iceland is quite funny, but gets less funny later on when he repeats the trauma of using other public pools. In a later chapter near the end of the trip, he goes on and on for many pages about how filthy and smelly he was. He bathed and put the smelly clothes back on... did he never learn how to launder his clothes? As he wrote in the prologue, it was a fulfilling and rewarding trip for Rueb. He learned just how physically and mentally tough and competent he is, and it has apparently inspired him to take on many more photography challenges.
There is a significant amount of redundancy and repetition in the book, and a savvy editor would probably have excised about 25% of the writing. I think that more emphasis on the unique aspects of the trip and less on the mundane, repetitive aspects would have made for a more taut, readable book. I also keep a travel journal for all of my major trips, and I know how hard it is to "kill your darlings", i.e. delete your own words, once they're on the page. Typical of many of the SPA's that I've read, there are also quite a few spelling, grammar and word choice errors which seem to get worse in the latter part of the book, as if he got tired of the proofreading job. These would have been caught by a skillful editor with a sharp red pencil.
Nevertheless, I learned a lot about the beautiful country of Iceland, both the people and the geography, and have moved Iceland up near the top of my travel bucket list - though I won't be doing it in a backpack and sleeping in a tent!
It seemed like a book about rain. And more rain. While mention is made of the fantastic waterfalls, the waterfall most covered was the rain.
