In the decade since their younger sister's death, James and Ian Lawrence have drifted apart - James to pursue a steady but humdrum career as a CPA in Kansas City, Ian to go adventuring off to Leipzig, Germany, for his doctorate in economics. But when Ian mysteriously disappears while researching the economics of organized crime, James must take a leave of absence to look for him. Risking everything, he embarks on a perilous journey across Europe, digging deeply into the business affairs of some very private, very dangerous people. But in the search for Ian, he discovers a brewing revolution that will shock the world - and change what he sees as his own place in it.

"A first-rate suspense thriller...delivers gripping action, well-rounded characters, and a tantalizing plot...The Price of Innocence is a complete package of entertainment. Devore skillfully immerses his readers in German and Czech cultures, adding rich international flavors...As if an exciting, precise plot weren't enough, the author also fills his story with subtle but powerful themes, including respect for women, eternal optimism in the face of defeat, and the strength of brotherly love...Fans of John Grisham's legal thrillers or Robert Ludlum's intricate action scenes are going to be pleased with Devore's contribution...Readers of all ages will enjoy this intelligent novel." -ForeWord Clarion Review (5 Stars)

The Price of Innocence, by Bryan Devore, is a fast paced thriller based on organized crime. Ian, an exchange student in Germany, goes missing and it's up to his brother James who is a CPA to find him. When James gets there and starts digging, he soon finds that he's in trouble himself and needs help too. James has many people who back him and help him in not only finding his brother, but in hopes of shutting down the mob all together, who were clearly behind his disappearance to begin with, and the mob will stop at nothing to keep that from happening!

I absolutely loved this book, and once I picked it up I could not put it down. The author does an amazing job and really building up his characters, making the audience love the the good guys, hate the bad guys, and really question whether they should trust the one's who's intentions are not clear from the start. Devore does an amazing job at keeping his reader guessing and just feeding into that "what's going to happen next" feeling that keeps you hooked! This is a page turner for sure. I definitely recommend this to those who love thrillers! I look forward to reading more by this author!

Ian Lawrence is finishing his PhD in Germany. He becomes involved with a protest group and goes missing. His older brother, James, goes to Germany to find him and stumbles into organized crime. The writing is good and the mistakes are minimal. The characters come alive for the reader. It's easy to care about them hoping they make it through each difficulty in one piece. Some of the situations are a bit far fetched but with fiction it's ok because the good guys have to win. Be prepared because this book won't let you put it down. I enjoyed this book. I read it in two days (with a long night).
I was intrigued by this story of two brothers from Kansas who had grown up close, engaging in sometimes dangerous activities like tornado chasing, but who had grown apart as their lives took different paths. The complication of the loss of a sister early in their lives served as an anchoring point for both. Focusing on the all too real issue of human trafficking and the business of organized crime, the story has one brother "disappearing" in Europe, and the older setting out to find him. While there are some implausible events that stretch the imagination, over all, the story takes the reader on a journey into the darker side of life, and reveals the presence of good and evil in many of the lives.

The plot is interesting, giving some historical background into the falling of the Berlin Wall, and the young people involved. It is well written and grammatically correct, which is wonderful given the apparent lack of editing of some "new" books. For those who may be concerned, given the topic of organized crime, the language is not offensive and is appropriate to the characters. While it is not a page turner that kept me up late, I was anxious to see that happened to the brothers, so it was a pretty fast read.
Ian and James are brothers from Kansas, Ian is a college student working on his dissertation and James is a CPA and doing quite well. James gets a call from his Mom stating that Ian is missing. After some research James is sure that Ian is now in Russia. He fears he is in danger; he gets on a plane to bring his brother home. Little does he know just what Ian is involved in.

The things that can happen in such a short period of time is amazing. Bullets fly, kidnappings happen, drugs are sold, money laundered and people die. Ian is working to.complete his dissertation and to show the world what corruption is all about. Now that James is with him will they make it out of the Mofia world? Will Ian be able to save hIs girlfriend and the lives of those he works with?
This book is very enthralling. The suspense, action and excitement is never ending. This book gives you a glimpse of a world you may not want to know. It's a dark, ugly world; more than you ever could imagine.
I bought this book, on very first day it released since I already read his first book. I thoroughly enjoyed his writing style. He laid down the new theme - "Economics of Criminal Organization" very nicely.
Good description of Europe particularly Prauge & Berlin.
