My husband asked me several times if the annotations didn't get in the way of the stories. Silly man. I bought the books for the annotations. If I wanted to read the stories without them, I have the Complete Sherlock Holmes, and have read them twice already. The annotations do not disappoint. They are informative, illuminating, and sometimes hilarious. True, they are two huge books that are taking a long time to digest, but worth digesting, and very enjoyable.
I have Baring-Gould's annotated book and use it. Klinger's book, however, is much better organized and includes many fascinating and useful tidbits. I have been using Volume I for a number of months now and find I cannot do without it to the point that I will be buying Volume II to cover the later half of the canon as well.
This 'New, Annotated Sherlock Holmes-Vol. 1-Stories' is a great read, with lots of temporal and localized London data collected regarding the story in a separate column (like reading an English Koran with original verbatim text innner-column and notation, marginalia outer-column. However Conan-Doyle writes so clearly and directly, only the jaded will read any outer column, but they might look at the period engravings from The Strand Mag. as they read the story. But after I have read each story, I read this marginalia and gather 3-D local information that surely Holmes had locked in his cranium. Holmes would be impressed by its completeness, but mystified as to why American readers should need such "Elementary" information as in this tome.
Yes, I think all Holmes and Watson fans should visit London and get their own 3-D localized experience, instigated by this great book! F.J.Morant.
Many fans of Sherlock Holmes grew up reading the annotated version of the stories featuring the famous "consulting detective," courtesy of a learned fellow named William S. Baring-Gould. His day gig was creative director of Time magazine's circulation and corporate education divisions. Most of the rest of the time, apparently, he thought about Sherlock Holmes.

Baring-Gould's "The Annotated Sherlock Holmes" was published in 1967, the year he died. I still have it, and have been reading it since acquiring a copy of the two-volume set in the mid-1970s. It was then and is now a wonderful reading experience -- the text of the stories flanked by helpful annotations. Don't know what a dog cart is, for example? Baring-Gould supplied you with an informative -- and often charming and witty -- note about it.

But clearly, it was time for an update. Enter "The New Annotated Sherlock Holmes," a project overseen by Leslie S. Klinger, a lawyer and writer. Basically, Klinger shows the same respect for the Holmes canon as did Baring-Gould, but offers new annotations and insights gleaned from all the Holmes scholarship that has taken place in the four decades since Baring-Gould died.

I refrain from giving it four stars for just one reason Unlike Baring-Gould's, this two-volume edition contains only the 56 Holmes short stories and NOT the four Holmes novels. Personally, I think the project could have been done without expanding it to a three-volume set, but unfortunately that did not happen. For the novels, you will have to buy Klinger's "The New Annotated Sherlock Holmes The Novels." However, I must also confess that I went ahead and purchased that separate volume. Die-hard Holmes fans will do the same. If you have such a person in your life, getting these three volumes for him or her surely would be considered a marvelous gift.
This two volume box edition would be a wonderful gift for the reader who loves the stories of Sherlock Holmes. There are many solid collections of these 56 tales by Arthur Conan Doyle, but if the reader is looking for explanations of the background and history of the Victorian age in which the stories are set, this is the edition for you.

This large oversize set is similiar in size to last year's "Far Side" collection of all of Gary Larsen's drawings. With nearly 1,900 pages, the annotations are placed alongside the text for quick reference along with some of the original illustations which accompanied those stories. And frankly, the price is a steal for an edition of this quality (think of the Library of America publications).

The reader should be aware that the four Sherlock Holmes novels (like "The Hound of the Basketvilles", "A Study In Scarlet", et al) are NOT in this edition --they will be published in a third volume next year. This new edition is more comprehensive than the two volume set of William Baring-Gould (1968) and far less bulky than the nine volume edition from Oxford University Press. The writing is clear and concise by the editor (Leslie Klinger) who has performed considerable research on the world of Sherlock Holmes. This is an edition that the reader will return to again and again on a cold winter's night.
A good investment for the 'Baker Street tragic' but there are cheaper versions out there for the general reader.
Notes and comments appear rather US oriented, and some of the definitions and explanations reveal a somewhat lack of familiarity with the English way of life. Does an American need a definition of a tram-car? Nonetheless, I treasure my copy!
