This is a powerful romantic suspense/thriller of healing, fighting demons and finding love. While Beneath the Burn does contain some uncomfortable scenes, those events strengthen the story and enable you to feel what these characters felt and suffer what they have and are continuing to suffer.

Charlee was given to Roy Oxford, a very wealthy and dangerous man, when she was only sixteen as payment for her father's gambling debts. For years she suffered through unfathomable acts until she was able to escape. Using an alias and working as a tattoo artist she meets Jay, a broken rockstar who appears at her tattoo parlor one evening. Charlee sees the evidence of Jay's abuse on his skin and instantly feels a closeness to him. Jay recognized the pain in Charlee's eyes and knows she has demons similar to his own. That night both their lives changed and an unbreakable connection was formed.

Three years later, Charlee finds Jay again. The years apart were spent in a nightmare of enslavement for her and poisoned with drugs and women for him. But finding each other and being together can heal them both. They'll have to open up and be honest about their pasts and learn to trust the other. All while trying to keep Charlee safe from the madman who wants her back.

There are so many constantly changing emotions in this suspenseful story. Sadness, pain, trust, betrayal and a deep developing love. My heart melted with each horrifying past event we learned about Charlee and Jay. They both were incredibly brave and had an inner determination that many people would not have found. I loved Jay. He was such broken and troubled man and the light that being with Charlee brought out in him was so blinding and beautiful. He was protective of Charlee and kept her safety and happiness as his top priority. Charlee should have given up years before, but she kept fighting and continued to survive. She showed an unending patience with Jay and his problems and was able to help heal him in a way no one else could.

The three bandmates along with Tony and especially Nathan were excellent secondary characters and added that little extra that was needed to the story.

This was a truly beautiful story that took me on a rollercoaster of emotions - and I loved every bit of it. I've enjoyed other stories by this author and look forward to more.

With BDSM romance, it takes guts for an author to write a Dominant hero with drug addiction and abuse triggers. How do you do that and still make him an appealing Master? Well, if you want to know how, read Beneath the Burn. But be warned - you'll get so caught up in the story, you really won't pay attention to how she did it--you'll just like how well she did, lol. This is a book where two people find unique solutions to their issues in order to be able to love one another. Not everyone will agree with the tactics they take, but I think Pam Godwin did a beautiful job of showing how Charlee and Jay had the courage to make that love work, and put their demons to rest. Oh, and the eroticism is woven in well, so while you're rooting for them emotionally, you're turning on the fan during those steamy love scenes. This is a keeper shelf love story for me.

Side note The only reason I knocked a star off a 5-star rating was because, after the fabulous opening chapter, it seemed to drag a bit. The hero and heroine are separate for a few chapters, both going through their own personal hells, and while that was realistic for what was happening with them, I felt like the author could have shown us how awful their lives were in a shorter time period so we could get back to them being together sooner. But the moment they're back together, the book takes off and shines, so I really would have gone with 4.5 stars if it was an option.
I'm not quite sure how I stumbled upon this book but I have read a lot of Pam Godwin’s books so I'm really not that surprised that it was sitting in my TBR.
Charlie and Jay have left me speechless. This book is so much more than I ever would have thought it to be.
Fate. What is Fate? A chance meeting? A fleeting glance? Seeing something in someone that calls to you? Something that resonates with you. Something that calls out to you. Soulmates? Fate? Written in the stars?  These are terms that bring me back to this couple.
Vulnerability. Not to spoil anything, but there is a question/ quote in this book that is sticking with me. “Will you be vulnerable with me?” what does that mean to you? To me it means laying yourself bare. Putting all your cards on the table. Letting someone in on your darkest fears. Darkest desires. Deepest Hopes. Deepest desires. Letting someone in to those places no one else dares to go. Letting someone see a side of you that no one else sees. Are you willing to rip yourself open and show those most secret pieces to another? Are you willing to be vulnerable with someone?
Jay and Charlie have been thru more than anyone person should have to bare. Both have been dealing with their deep seated issues the best way they can, yet showing an outward strength that is beyond brave, yet questionable in the eyes of many. How does one know how they would handle a situation without actually going through it themselves. These two see the pain that lives in the other. These two have a connection like no other. These two have ripped me apart, but like they do for each other, they slowly put me back together.
This story has everything. Drama. Emotion. Hate. Love. Hurt and pain. Happiness and feistiness. I wish I could have Charlie’s strength and forgiveness. After everything she has been thru and to be the person she still is…. That is the kind of woman I strive to be. Jay is my most favorite when he is at his most vulnerable. Maybe I'm a fixer and that's what I look for. Not necessarily someone/ something to ‘fix’ but someone/ something to ‘help’. Together these two are everything but apart they seem to he nothing. Just living day to day in Hope that something better comes along.
