Kare First Love Vol 1 Kaho Miyasaka Books
~3/5I read several books in this series a long time ago, and remembered really liking it. I've had my eye on the series for a while, wanting to read more of it, but just not getting around to getting any of the volumes. I've finally decided to jump on board with it, though, and got a few volumes the other day, and am in the works of getting the rest of the series.
It's starting out similar to what I remember, but so much of it is a blank for me, that I'm enjoying re-reading it so far. Also, the beginning of the series: not very good in terms of story and character. It gets better, though (I think?), and I'm excited for that.
So, Karin, our main character, is a quiet, `ugly', shy, and awkward girl. She's also holding in a lot of anger. But she's `friends' with Yuko, a very `pretty' and popular girl at her school, who is constantly putting Karin down but making it look like she's being nice/it's all a joke, and also always flirting with boys. Karin incidentally meets this popular, playboy from another school, who's interested in Karin from the start, but who Yuko is trying to win over, and yet who Karin is trying to ignore.
Karin, at this point, is just okay. I'm not a huge fan, but I don't dislike her very much at the moment. She gets better, I believe/hope, but at the moment her anger is a little over the top, and yet she is also not doing anything about it. Plus, her reactions are always done so over the top, and that's just kind of annoying at the moment.
Kiriya is alright too. He's nice, and he's tough (I guess?), and he has good intentions. We don't actually get to know him very well in this volume, so I'm looking forward to finding out who he actually is as a character.
I don't like Yuko. She's just an over the top bitchy popular girl, in a very stereotypical fashion, and I'm looking forward to her plot line being finished. Karin is also starting to interact with another girl in her class, Nanri, who is collected and doesn't care what anyone thinks of her. I like her. And I'm looking forward to seeing more of her.
Overall, this volume was a little weak. It's falling very easily into the mean girl trope with Yuko, including her already threatening Karin after finding out she was hanging out with Kiriya. Hopefully that plot will end in the next volume (or two, at most), and something better with happen. And I don't remember how far I got in this series before (about halfway, I think), but I'm enjoying reading it over again, especially since I remembered so little, and I'm looking forward to getting to the story that I don't remember anything about.

Kare First Love Vol 1 Kaho Miyasaka Books Reviews
I liked "Kare First Love" alright. It wasn't bad, just average.
I thought the story was pretty cliche. The hot guy falls for the girl-who-looks-ugly-because-she-doesn't-dress-right-but-is really-pretty. And of course, there's the obligatory rotten friend who's jealous and tries to screw up the girl's chances with the guy.
Characters were ok. Pretty standard. I had mixed feelings about Karin. She's the pushover type with no self-esteem, but I did think that the way she really thinks about things was funny, and showed that she wasn't a complete loser.
The art's good. Karin looks satisfiably geeky in the first part of the book, and she's beautiful later. Actually, pretty much everyone in this manga is beautiful. The environments are done well too.
Overall, you should read this if you don't have anything else, but there are better Shoujo titles like "Hot Gimmick" and "Peach Girl". "Kare First Love" is just mediocre.
"Kare First Love" is the kind of manga I wished I had read when I was in Junior High/ High school! This manga has a great story & characters that just about anyone can relate to!
Anyone who has ever been shy, socially awkward, or dealt with peer pressure ( growing pains) & been in LOVE =)... will be able to relate to this book.
Karin is that awkward, geeky girl who is socially awkward, a passive, people pleaser who lets herself get bullied by her popular classmate to share her home work. On her way to school at the subway, Karin met a boy named Kiriya. Kiriya seems to be fascinated by Karin & Karin can't stand him since she isn't use to getting that much attention.
Geeky Karin gets pressured by her classmate again to go on a group date where she meets Kiriya & Karin was humiliated by her classmate in front of everybody. As if things weren't bad enough her classmate wants Kiriya badly & Karin got drunk accidentally (making a very bad impression)!!!
What will poor Karin do? will she let her classmate snag Kiriya a way? or will she ever be brave enough to get close to Kiriya? Will Karin ever see herself the way Kiriya sees her?
Kare's First love is probably my favorite shoujo manga at the moment. It's a story about coming of age, self discovery, dealing with that awkward stage in your life & that unforgettable first love!!!
Such a great manga that is a MUST read!! One of the best current shojo!! Viz has done a great job licensing all these shojo titles!
Kare First Love, Vol. 1 (Original)[ KARE FIRST LOVE, VOL. 1 (ORIGINAL) ] by Miyasaka, Kaho (Author) Sep-07-04[ Paperback ] is the first volume in the Kare First Love and is about 16 Karin Karino who is trying to balance between love and friendship. Yuka her so called "best friend" uses her for homework. One day she meets a guy named Kiriya and her feelings start to bloom. Unfortunately her "friend" Yuka feels that she should be the one who should Kiriya's first love and tries everything to torpedo Karin's new found love. I very much enjoyed it. Highly recommended. 5/5.
This manga centres around Karin, a shy, quiet, high school girl who meets the popular, outgoing Kiriya, who goes to a neighbouring high school. The story focuses on the relationship that develops between them.
The mood of this series is generally pretty light hearted even though it does have its fair share of drama. From problems faced within their relationship to trouble created by those around them, the series is basically about the couple's relationship and how this evolves over time.
On the whole, this is a solid shojo series, well worth picking up. The characters are all really well developed and Karin and Kiriya are both likeable. The story is pretty fast paced and I found myself instantly sucked in by it. It does have its sappy moments, but that's what we all love about shojo manga after all!
there some mild damage but nothing to bad, still good for a used book
~3/5
